Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

WE HAVE READ with great interest Graham Montgomerie's timely and useful article entitled "Watch your fuel system: be ready for bad, weather" (CM October 31). It is good to see this important subject being treated so responsibly at exactly the right time of year!

However, there is one small point in the article which did raise a query in our minds. On page 58 in the third column you state that "Diesel fuel for the UK market must conform to BS 2869".

We are not aware of any legislation which invokes this British Standard under regulations. We have, in fact, been approached by a Trading Standards Officer who drew our attention to this paragraph and we have told him that we do not think there is any legislation in this area. I assume that this was just a slip of the pen but if he has been given this information from any source I should be glad to know.

MARJORIE ALLAN Head of Public Relations British Standards Institution Park Street, London W1 Our Engineering Editor says: "It is the industry which requires the fuel to conform to BS 2869. There is no governing legislation on conformity and thus the companies in question are not required to do so by law." — Editor.
