Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THREE State-owned bus companies • L appealed in Glasgow, last Friday, against the grant of a licence by the Scottish Licensing Authority to Messrs. McLean Bros., Glasgow, to run tours to Calzean Castle, Ayrshire. Mr. R. Farrell, for the appellants, the Western S.M.T. Co., Ltd., W. Alexander and Sons, Ltd., and D. Lawson, Ltd., said that Western S.M.T. already provided a stage-carriage service to the castle from Glasgow and a tour from Ayr. The new tour would cause abstraction of traffic from the existing facilities.

The ground for objection by the Alexander and Lawson concerns was that the granting of a tours licence to a newcomer would reduce revenue on their services. Western S.M.T. was willing to make route alterations and had. in fact, applied to provide a tour to Calzean Castle.

The respondents argued that Western S.M.T. had failed to realize the attraction of the castle for Glaseow people and had done nothing until they had recognized it.

Mr. W. Grant, -Q.C.. the inspector who heard the case, is to make his report to the Minister.
