• Two new four-wheel-drive pickups, the Hijet and the Fourtrak, will be available from Daihatsu early in 1987.
The pickups made their UK debut on the Daihatsu stand at the Royal Smithfield Show at Earls Court East week, but prices have yet to be announced.
The Fourtrak pickup is a new addition to the Fourtrak range and uses the same style of cab, five-speed all-synchromesh gearbox, and two-speed transfer box, with manual locking front hubs.
It comes with either a 65kW (87hp) two-litre petrol engine or a 54kW (72hp) 2.7 litre IDI diesel engine and has a payload of one tonne (diesel) or 1.125 tonnes (petrol).
The Hijet is a 4x4 pickup version of the Hijet panel microvan announced at the Motor Show earlier this year.
Powered by the same 33kW (44hp) 993cc petrol engine, the 4x4 Hijet has a four-speed all-synchromesh gearbox with the push button selection of four-wheel-drive and leveroperated low and high ratios.
The four-wheel-drive option on the old 850 microvan was considered for impact from Japan by Daihatsu UK some years ago, but a combination of tight import quotas (7,800 vehicles per year), and a lack of interest has delayed its introduction until now.
The Hijet model range now consists of the 2WD Panel van and the 4WD pickup. Fourtrak commercials are now available in hard top, soft top and pickup versions, with petrol or diesel engines.
