/ Scania is about to cease production of its 1)8 and 1)58 diesel engines.
Introduced in 1961, naturally-aspirated, turbocharged and turbocharged airto-air charge-cooled versions of the 7.9 litre unit were developed to give power outputs ranging from I22kW (16311p) to 181kW (242hp) to drive P82 models in the 16.26 to 32.52 tonne weight category.
The "82" designation will continue, but only with Scania's Urban G and P lightweight 16.26 tonne rigid models which use the later and more powerful DS9 8.5 litre engine rated at 150kW (20411p) at 2,200rpm and developing 750Nin (5,531lb ft) or torque at 1,550rpm.
The first batch of 10 Urban models, introduced specifically for the British market at this year's Commercial Vehicle Show, are due to arrive in the UK this week and could be seen on the road before Christmas.
Over the last 25 years Scania has produced 106,500 units in the 1)8 engine range, of which 15,000 were sold in the USA where they were used to power Mack trucks.
