DAF and Saviem release details of their jointly designed light-medium trucks

THE FIRST two light trucks from the European Truck Design consortium — the Club of Four were released on Monday.

The Club, comprising DAF, Magirus Deutz, Saviem and Volvo, was formed in November 1971 with the purpose of developing a joint light truck range to include vehicles in the 6-12 tons gvw category. After signing a joint co-operation agreement, the group design office was established near Paris in 1972, and the engineering staff from the member companies pooled their knowledge, to progress their joint venture. DAF and Saviem have just released details of the first trucks to come from the consortium.

The common components for the new range will be produced on tools jointly owned by the ETD and the vehicles in which these components will be utilized will he marketed by each of the four partners under its own name and through its own sales outlets.

Although the research, development and production aspects were under a joint agreement, this does not apply to the marketing side. Each member is free to sell its trucks in whatever country it chooses. For example, France will not be the sole preserve of Saviem, which will thus face competition from the other member companies. For each Club vehicle sold, the individual member company will pay a fee to the central European Truck Design group to help pay off the costs.

DAF

THE DAF contribution consists of two light trucks — the F700 and F900 — with gross vehicle weights of 6.5 and 8.0 tonnes (6.4 and 7.9 tons) respective Depending on the eventual bodywo fitted, DAF claims that the payload f the 700 series should be in the 2.5 to ton region and, for the 900, appro mately 4 to 4.5 tons. It is expected ti such trucks will operate mainly in urt areas for short to medium-dista operation. Both the new DAFs will exhibited for the first time at model only The smaller engine is a Perkins unit while the DD575 is of DAFs own design and manufacture, being used at present in its 1200 and 1400 models in Europe which are not available in the UK.

The gearboxes in the DAF range are all five-speed synchromesh units of ZF manufacture. The axles are common components for the whole group from E.T. (European Transmissions), part of the American Dana group.

Single-reduction hypoid rear axles are standard components for both F700 and 900 series vehicles.

The cabs are also common components; DAF receives them in shell form and fully trims them itself. This cab, designated the F200, is 2.02m (6ft 7.5 in) wide and 1.44m (4ft 9in) from bumper to rear of cab. The cab floor is virtually unobstructed in the Perkinsengined models, but a small "hump" has been found necessary to accommodate the larger DD575 unit, in spite of the fact that the inlet manifold has been modified to obtain a low installation level. For major work on the engine the cab is tilted by hand to a maximum of 52 degrees with the aid of two torsion bars, although routine level checking can be carried out without tilting. Rubber mountings are included fore and aft, with those at the rear also incorporating shock absorbers.

The chassis frame is a combination of both DAF and Club "bits". The two main channel-section longitudinal members are DAF pressings while the cross-members are universal. In a similar style to that of the DAF eightwheeler, the top of the chassis frame is completely flat to enable bodywork to be mounted without any drastic modifications. If a trailer is to be drawn (only possible with the F900DD version) a towing beam and trailer coupling can be supplied.

In both series there is a choice of wheelbases permitting different body lengths of 4.6, 5.6 and 6.6m (15ft I in, 18ft 4in and 21 ft 9in).

The electrical systems are 12V throughout with the exception of the starting system on the F900DD which operates a 24V through a series-parallel switch. A single 135Ah battery is standard for the DE-engined models while the DD versions have two batteries with a capacity of 120Ah with I35Ah available as an optional extra.

EEC complying brakes

Air-over-hydraulic brakes are utilized featuring separate circuits for the front and rear with load sensing at the rear. The emergency/ parking brake has two spring-brake actuators located in the longitudinal chassis members and an exhaust brake is standard equipmer Although the small DAFs will available in parts of Europe in 19 they are not expected to be available the UK before late 1976.

Saviem

FULL details of the J-series fr Saviem will not be released until Brussels Show in January, but basic: the range will consist of three kg models of 9, 11 and 13 tonnes g Two in-line six-cylinder diesel engi will be available; the 112kW (1501 SAE rating) type 797 and the I27k (170bhp) type 798.

The deputy director-general Saviem, M. Bosquet, is also the ch man of the Societe Europeenne T ravaux et de Developpement (FT All four makers are planning to sl their new ranges at Brussels Show, will be having press unveilings bei this — Saviem at Cannes on Januar Volvo at Ghent on January 13 and ID on January 7.
