Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

increases approved

A PROPOSAL by the ruling Labour Party of GLC for a 36 per cent increase in London Transport fares from April 1975, which will provide an extra £36 million a year, (CM Nov. 8) has been approved by 54 votes to 33.

At present levels fares were estimated to yield only £156m. If no allowance were made for increased fares, the estimated deficit for 1975 would be £125 million.

The alternative to higher fares would be a substantial cut in services, which the council totally opposed.
