BETTER ROADS play their part in keeping down road haulage costs. This was the message of a speech last Friday by Mr Ken Hatcher, chairman of the Road Haulage Association, Speaking at the annual dinner of the Association's Devon and Cornwall area, Mr Hatcher said that the haulage industry had acknowledged that there was a case for designating lorry routes to take vehicles away from inadequate road structures, but the other side of the same coin was the need for a complete network of adequate roads.
He urged members in this time of dramatically increasing costs to review their financial situation at least once a month in a realistic and ruthless manner. "Each member must work out his own salvation in the way which he finds best, and must not allow himself to be hoodwinked or bullied by his customers — or if it comes to that, by the Government — into continuing to run his business for a return which is derisory when measured against the time, effort, expertise and money that he has put into it," said Mr Hatcher.
