A TEAM of first-year fitters from Soundwell Technical College, Bristol won the second National Vehicle Trades Apprentice competition organized by the Road Transport Industry Training Board in Solihull last week. The initial entry was 200 teams of 1,000 apprentices.
They were closely followed by Huddersfield Technical College, Lanarkshire Automobile Group Training Association and Chesterfield College of Technology in that order. Presenting the trophy and prizes, Mr Neil Carmichael, Parliamentary Under-Secretary, Department of the Environment, emphasized the Department's interest in technical training.
He pointed out the effect which was apparent on commercial vehicle maintenance and said that the much improved standards which prevailed could be attributed in part to improved training standards.
