Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A new range of "under 30cwt". bodies tailored for Ford Transit 25cwt, 30cwt and 35cwt long-wheelbase chassis/cabs was announced on Tuesday by Unit Body Developments Ltd. during a Press open day at the company's new works in Chester Road, Boreham Wood, Herts. All the tailored bodies are of aluminium construction of basically similar design to that of the unit construction models made by the concern and will later be available for other selected makes of chassis' cab.

The range comprises two box vans of 410 Cu. ft. and 475 cu. ft. capacity and a Luton 550 Cu. ft. body. Transits equipped with any of these bodies have a taxation weight of under 30cwt apart from the 35cwt model powered by a diesel and fitted with a Luton body. This is also under 30cwt if it is fitted with curtains at the rear in place of a roller shutter.

The weights of the box bodies are 635Ib and 674Ib respectively while the Luton bodies are 7241b. Payloads of the petrol-engined models correspond to the chassis maker's rating in every case, the penalty in employing a diesel engine being about 2cwt extra weight. The box bodies have a length of approximately 9ft. 11in., while the Luton has a main body length of about 10ft. 1in. The internal height of the larger box body and the Luton is 7ft. 4in., the 410 Cu. ft. box body having a height of 6ft. 4in. In basic form the box bodies cost £324 and £346 respectively, the cost of the Luton body being £375.

Tailoring the bodies to suit selected chassis has enabled weight and cost to be reduced and fabrication to be simplified, a kit of body parts being assembled in 18 hours in a typical case. Body servicing is provided on a nationwide basis by the company's distributor network.

A one-piece seamless roof skin, a onepiece weather-and-heat-proof plywood floor and moulded-plastics wheel boxes are included in features of the tailored bodies that differ from the unit-built type. The body has no cross-bearers and this has enabled the floor height to be reduced to 2ft. 2in. (a saving of 4in.) and the sides are also of one-piece construction. The bulkhead ofthe box bodies is a separate unit, the bulkhead of the Luton being integral with the back of the cab.

Options include a one-piece glass-reinforced plastics roof, double doors On place of roller shutter), side and rear skirts, alloy or hardwood interior lashing rails and plywood lining. UBD tailored bodies are immediately available, the supply of complete vehicles being solely dependent on the availability of chassis cabs.
