• Some interesting tippers are emerging from the light-alloy body shop recently opened by Reynolds Boughton Engineering Services Ltd. at Amersham.

One unit, for carrying hot tarmacadam, was mounted on an AEC Marshal with a 10ft Sin. wheelbase. The body has a capacity of 10 cu.yd. and is carried on a Sin, by 3in. mildsteel channel sub-frame. The floor is supported on 4in. by 2in. light-alloy channel section cross-members and consists of -ain. thick alloy plate. Double-skinned sides, front and tail boards are riveted to the channel and tophat-section framework, the inner skin being of 10g and the outer of 18g light-alloy sheet. The cavity between the skins is filled with resin-bonded glassfibre for insulation.

Tipping is by an Edbro twin front ram unit and the total weight of the body and tipping gear is 23.75cwt.

The search for greater carrying capacity on high quality tippers has led Reynolds Boughton to introduce light-alloy bodies on the Bedford Boughton 6 x 4 conversions. The vehicle in the accompanying picture has a 0.25in. floor plate. Despite the heavy construction of the 9.5 cu.yd. capacity body it weighs complete with wings only 13cwt. A Marrel tipping gear is fitted and the vehicle has a 132in. wheelbase. The total unladen weight is 7 tons 10cwt 3qr.
