Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• He had sympathy for the objectors who had suffered as a result of rate-cutting, but he was obliged to grant the final part of an amalgamation application, said Mr J. A. T. Hanlon, the Northern LA, in Carlisle on Monday. He called a special inquiry so that Cumberland hauliers might air their grievances against alleged rate-cutting by A. Corbett arid Sons (Wearhead) Ltd.

Last month Northern Land Contractors Ltd". had applied to amalgamate licences held by 19 companies it had acquired. This was granted except regarding the Corbett vehicles (CM November 11.

The LA was told this week that in 1965 F. Brown (Thursbyl Ltd. had been granted a contract by British Gypsum Co. for hauling Cumberland to East Gate at a rate of 17s 6d per ton. Corbett had been a sub-contractor for Brown, doing this work as return load, but after two years, had approached British Gypsum direct and offered to do it for 16s a ton. The rate was now 16s 3d and a claim for a further increase was outstanding. The west coast hauliers had been unwilling to sign a 12-month contract requested by the customer because they said this rate was uneconomic.

Mr Hanlon said he had powers under section 178 to deal with such matters but on this occasion he would grant the residue of the application as sought.
