pLACING more emphasis on the need

to maintain traffic flow than the convenience of the travelling public, the Minister of Transport, in deciding an appeal by the London Transport Executive against a decision of the Metropolitan Traffic Commissioner, has refused to alter the Commissioner's ruling that buses running on six services along New Bridge Street and over Blackfriars Bridge should not stop to pick up or set down between Apothecary Street and south of the Thames.

Apothecary Street is near the Ludgate Circus end of New Bridge Street, a notorious bottleneck at peak hours when the stream of traffic along it joins others from the Victoria Embankment and Queen Victoria Street.

In the appeal decision, published last week, the Minister expresses regret that some passengers will have to walk a little farther than before, but says he is satisfied that the better traffic flow will be in the general interest.

NEW BRIGHTON ROUTE

POSSIBLE routes for a new LondonBrighton road are being surveyed and discussed with local authorities. One would leave the London County Council area at Mitcham and rejoin the A23 road near Handcross. The Minister of Transport gave this information in the House of Commons last week.

COAL LORRIES NEEDED

XTRA facilities were needed for the removal of opencast coal from sites in Northumberland and Durham, the Northern Licensing Authority, Mr. J. A. T.' Hanlon, stated last week. He granted a B licence for coal within 15 miles of base to William Richardson, Leadgate, Co. Durham.
