ALLOWING the addition of a livestock vehicle to the A licence -held by Claude Hughes and Co, (Carlisle), Ltd., Mr. N. L. C. Macaskic, Q.C., acting president of the Transport Tribunal, said last week that people concerned with livestock seemed to prefer road transport.

Hughes' application had been refused by the Northern Licensing Authority.

Mr. Macaskie pointed out that the British Transport Commission were the sole objectors, and evidence on behalf of the railways was that there had been a serious decline in the use of their facilities for livestock carriage.

Their facilities were probably just as suitable as when a Ministry had control and directed most of the livestock to them. But the fall in livestock carriage by rail seemed to point te a decided preference for road haulage.

He added that no attempt had been made to challenge the company's evidence of over-employment of vehicles, or of figures relating to increased earnings.

TENDER CUT TOO LATE: LICENCE REVOKED

A N operator who revised his tender

after he had failed to secure a contract, but was granted a licence for the service in question, has lost his licence on appeal by his rival.

Mr. P. D. Dromgoolc, of Stockeross Hire Service, appealed to the Minister of 'transport against the South Eastern Traffic Commissioners' refusal of a licence for express services between Newbury and Didcot, and against a grant to Reliance Motor Services (Newbury), Ltd.

In considering the representations made at the inquiry on July 16, the Minister noted that the contract, for the services had already, as a result of competitive tenders, been awarded to Mr. Dromgoole. He did not consider that his decision should be influenced by the fact that Reliance Motor Services later were willing to offer a lower quotation than that which they had unsuccessfully tendered.

He found no other grounds sufficient to justify a grant to Reliance, whose licence he has revoked. The licence is to be granted to Mr. Dromgoole.
