Mr. Hastie entered road haulage in 1910 with John Barrie, of Glasgow. After service in the 1914-18 War he became managing director of the Glasgow Hiring Co., Ltd. In 1941 he was responsible with others for the introduction of the Glasgow Dock Cartage Control, Ltd., and served as a director until the undertaking's functions were absorbed by the Road Haulage Organization. From 19421948 he was divisional road haulage officer for Scotland.

Mr. Young joined Youngs' Bus Service, Ltd., Paisley, in 1935 and in the following year became manager in charge of vehicles and traffic for Youngs' Express Deliveries, Ltd. From 1940 until 1949 he was responsible for the company's English depots.

It was also announced on Tuesday that Mr. W. H. Smith, North-Western divisional engineer, had been appointed rolling stock engineer at B.R.S. headquarters. He joined B.R.S. in 1951 after beginning his engineering career with Southport Transport Department in 1942, and later serving with Leyland Motors, Ltd.

t157 FOR DAMAGED LORRY

AN articulated lorry carrying pig-iron to the docks was damaged when a wharf suddenly collapsed beneath it. This was stated at Middlesbrough County Court on Monday, when the owners of the vehicle, E. Hind (South Bank), Ltd., were awarded damages of £157 against the wharf-owners, T. R. Dent and Son, Ltd.

A coiinter-claim for damage to the wharf was dismissed, and Dent's were ordered to pay costs. Judge C. Cohen said the lorry had obviously been positioned on instructions from dockers on the wharf.

INSTITUTE SECRETARY RESIGNS

AFTER serving the Institute of Public Cleansing since 1947, first as assistant secretary and from 1948 as secretary. Mr. K. Wyndham Brown is resigt•iing on March 31 next. He intends to settle in Vancouver, British Columbia.
