fl YSTERY surrounds a report at Newcastle-on-Tyne that a bus concern—stated to be United Automobile Services, Ltd.—has secured a two-acre site at Gallowgate for a bus station. This scheme recalls the dispute, which lasted more than two years, between bus operators and Newcastle City Council regarding the use of the Haymarket bus station and the pay
ment of standage fees. Eventually, the matter was settled at Newcastle County Court, this year, judgment being given for the corporation.
At present, bus operators are paying 4!1.500 a year for the use of the station, and, since the result of the Haymarket dispute, they have threatened to erect their own station.
Despite the repeated denial of the " United," members of Newcastle City Council insist that the report is correct and that the negotiations for buying the site were completed three weeks or a month ago.
Guildford Corporation has approved plans for the construction of a bus station on the cattle-market site.
