• The Transport & General Workers' Union is aiming to recruit franchise operators and owner-drivers by offering them a range of services which could include co-operative purchasing and business advice, John Moore, national secretary road transport for the TGWU, says the proposals are at an early stage but he is concerned at the growth of franchising, particularly in the milk industry. Moore says the TGWU is following an example set in Australia, where unions negotiate for franchise drivers so that "they don't get picked off individually".
According to Moore, ownerdrivers could benefit from existing legal services provided by the TGWU and the union is examining business services it could provide, including discounts on maintenance costs.
