Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• European operator GB Express is investing £6m on new tractive units and trailers as part of its plan to double its turnover and its cross-Channel movements by 1994/95.

Group managing director Jeff Duval says: "We ship 25,000 trucks per annum between the British Isles and France, Spain, Portugal and Italy we aim to double that by 1994/95."

GBE is currently turning over £25m a year and according to Duval: "The battle plan is to raise that to £50m by 1994/95." During the past financial year, up to October 1991, GBE made a profit of around £300,000 on a turnover of £18m. Duval says that despite the recession it will finish this year "better than break even".

The difficult trading times for all TIR operators has not stopped GBE investing heavily in new equipment: "We're investing on the best equipment money can buy," says Duval.

It is buying more than 100 tractors from Iveco and last week it took delivery of 21 customised Iveco Ford TurboStar 190.48HP tractors and 10 Seddon Atkinson 6x2 artics powered by Cummins E410 engines.

GBE has also ordered 150 new trailers from several builders including Krone and Fruehauf France.

"Investing during difficult times is the very factor that will end the recession," says Duval, "many people in the eighties have looked for the reward without taking risks — it doesn't work. Free enterprise is risk and reward."
