ANOTHER lever could be applied by the Government to push road freight on to the railways with news this week that they are considering abandoning vehicle excise tax and adding 10p to the price of diesel.
The move could be made next year and it could add E888 a year to the cost of running a 32-ton artic truck — despite the vehicle excise cuts.
It could add another £146,300,000 to the Treasury's massive £438,900,000 haul from diesel duty leaving another £663,700,000 to be recouped from the private motorist to match the £800,000,000 that comes from .vehicle excise.
