Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Have you ever had the experience in London of hailing an empty taxi apparently available for hire but without the "for hire" light lit up? You have. Oh good, I thought I was the only one who had been caught.

Well, I think I've found the answer to the apparent anomaly. The cab is possibly on permanent hire from Southern BRS. Yes, that's right — FROM Southern BRS.

You see, for the past 17 years the chairman and directors of Coutts Bank have had the taxi on contract from SBRS as a chauffeur driven car. They prefer the taxi because it's more manoeuvrable than a limousine — and a lot less pretentious, I'd say.

It seems too they're not such an up-stage lot at Coutts as the morning dress of their tellers might suggest — the chauffeur is an ex BRS lorry driver.

Bernard "Mac" IVIcClaren has been the bankers' driver for 17 years. So the next time you see an empty "unlit" taxi in London don't hail it, it's possibly on contract hire from BRS.
