breakdown truck of more than 3 tons unladen weight. I have been told that an hgv licence is not required to drive this vehicle because it is classed as engineering plant as it is fitted with lifting equipment.
Could you tell me if this is true or do I need an hgv driving licence?
A There is no exemption from the need to " hold an appropriate hgv driver's licence when driving breakdown vehicles although there is an exemption for engineering plant. However, it is most unlikely that any normal type of breakdown vehicle would be classified as engineering plant—so an hgv driving licence is necessary.
