AThere are regulations requiring certain vehicles to carry fire extinguishers as follows:—

Passenger vehicles as required by the PSV (Equipment and Use) Regulations 1958; Passenger vehicles carrying inflammable liquids as required by the Inflammable Liquids (Conveyance by Road) Regulations 1968: Vehicles carrying corrosive substances as required by the Corrosive Substances (Carriage by Road) Regulations 1971.

These regulations generally state that an efficient fire extinguisher must be carried in an easily accessible position.

Under a directive issued on May 4 1948 a petrol-engined vehicle carrying explosive sub

stances must carry a fire extinguisher capable of dealing with a petroleum spirit fire; a diesel carrying such material must carry a fire extinguisher, states the directive.

There are no regulations requiring fire extinguishers to be carried by normal goods-carrying vehicles.
