Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The squabble between the Transport Salaried Staffs Association and the Association of Clerical, Technical and Supervisory Staff over the British Road Services pay offer (CM July 2) has been resolved in that the memberships of both unions will receive payment retrospective to May 24. It is expected that weekly paid staff will be paid the accrued back pay on August 16 and monthly staff on September 16.

The TSSA acceptance of the pay offer is conditional on further talks being held with mangement if pay adjustments in other National Freight Corporation companies upset parities. TSSA have exclusive bargaining rights for clerical workers in National Carriers Ltd and Freightliners Ltd; hence, as pay talks were underway in those companies the -union was reluctant to compromise its position by agreeing immediately to the BRS offer, in company with ACTs.
