Baico Extensions, Forwardcontrol Conversions and Lightweight Big capacity Bodies

WWHILST chassis makers standardize their models in various wheelbase lengths there is a number of occasions where a few extra inches on the body length, the provision. of forward control, or other modifications from standard can make a big difference in the earning power. In this field, 13a:co Patents, Ltd., Baico Place, High Road, Chiswick, London, W.4, has had many years' experience: A recent visit to the company's works showed that operators were taking full advantage of the possibilities of modifying various makes of chassis, and the Baico concern was engaged upon a number of interesting conversions. One of the first machines that caught our eye was a Smart, forwardcontrol conversion of the Fordson 5-cwt. delivery van. Giving a body capacity of 115 culiin ft., the machine costs £170. Despite the added capacity, the construction is such that there is no increase in the unladen weight and the machine comes within the £10-tax limit. .

An accompanying illustration shows a recent batch of machines received by the Baico concern, and it will be noted that various popular makes are represented. In the centre can be seen a Dodge passenger chassis, this machine being chosen by an operator who waS requiring a Luton-type van in a hurry ; the Dodge fulfilled his requirements as to the leading dimensions. The Baico concern received the chassis at 2 p.m. on a Monday and the completed Luton van was delivered to the dealer's representative late the following Thursday night.

A novel conversion was being carried out on several Bedford shortwheelbase chassis; in these cases it being necessary to shorten the chassis

and to give a greater frame height, as they were to be used as the bases of the well-known Lewin sweeper. This work necessitated the removal of the cranks in the front axle, which were straightened and heat-treated, whilst at the rear longer brackets were used to carry the springs and a taper piece was inserted beneath them. These alterations called for the propeller shaft to run at a greater angle than is normal, but we understand that the standard Hardy Spicer joints have proved fully capable of dealing with the high angularity of the final drive.

Amongst the company's specialities are the production of Luton vans for all popular makes of 2-3-ton chassis, and several examples were on view.

The Baico extension is not confined to goods vehicles, for we learn of good reports of a Fordson coach with a 45-in, extension, which has been giving good service on Continental tours. The operator, Luxury Land Cruises, Ltd., reports that the machine has travelled, over some of the most difficult country in Europe, including the Alberg and GrossgIockner Passes. Recently this coach has been running in Yugoslavia and over the Weurzen Pass, and it is believed that this is the first occasion on which a British coach of such dimensions has dompIeted the climb.
