were afforded an opportunity, recently, of ascertaining something of the condition of the H.S.G. producergas lorry that has been in operation in the hands of a haulier since early in May last ; its activities were referred to in our issue dated May 28. On regular running, night and day, between Leeds and London, with 70-80-mile terminal journeys, it has covered 11,334 miles, carrying an average of 5-6 tons, in 36 working days. It had previously been run lot a distance of about 1,700 miles.
It is stated by one of the drivers that its performance, generally, has been at least equal to that of a similar petrol lorry; whilst he prefers driving the gas vehicle. An analysis of the oil drawn from the sump after this period (carried out by W. B. Dick and Co., Ltd.) revealed that it was suitable for con tinuation in service. Burning of the fire-bars had necessitated certain renewals, but a new alloy for these parts is now being tested and it is thought that this trouble is overcome. The cylinder head was removed in our presence and we observed that there
was very little carbon. A light redbrown deposit was noticeable on the valves, around the plug holes and on parts of the pistons and protruding portions of the bead. This deposit is to be analysed. We measured the cylinder bores against a steel gauge, turned to size when the unit was new. Taking, in each bore, measurements at three levels in two directions, we found that on the average there was approximately 0.001 in. wear.
Before dismantling, we took the machine for a short test, running it with 6 tons on board, up a hill which has a gradient of 1 in S. • On this slope a stop and restart were effected with ease and a steady climb in first gear at 6 m.p.h. was made. Except for slight spitting, at low speeds and wide throttle openings, the general running was satisfactory.
