Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Toby Clark Cummins launched two new ranges of engines at the CV Show, covering the mid-range market for Eure-3 and beyond.

The ISBe will replace the BSeries; it is the result of Cummins co-operation with Inca and New Holland in the European Engine Alliance (Wk) which was launched in 1996.

The 8.3-litre ISCD is a development of the C-Series and, like the ISBe, features full electronic control.

The ISBe is a one-litre-percylinder design, available in four and six-cylinder versions, which shares the same bore and stroke as the B-Series with a redesigned block and four-valve head that form the basis of all the EEA engines.

Cummins' variant uses a common-rail fuel-injection system, developing injection pressures up to 1,400bar and allowing it to meet Euro-3 emissions levels without after treatment or exhaustgas recirculation (EGR).

Both models offer around 20% more torque than their BSeries counterparts, with the suggestion from Cummins that more is to come. Maximum power ratings are also up by around 20%, to nominal ratings of 170hp for the four-cylinder unit and 275hp for the ISBe six.

The charge-cooled engines all feature a wastegated turbocharger for better lowspeed torque and throttle response.

The engine has been designed for refinement, says Cummins, with a ''stabilised block structure'' featuring a rigid ladder frame, and rearmounted cam gears and ancillary drives.

Fluid lines are built into the block, and service intervals are designed to be 50,000km, with 200,000km before valve aljustment.

Cummins' INTERACT electronic control system incorporates many of the features already seen on larger engines, such as speed limiting, coldstart management, cruise control and high idle torque.

Road Relay will be an option—the system can communicate with modern ABS, traction control and auto

mated gearchange systems.

The ISEle should not be confused with the 156, a development of the B-Series which is already in service in the US. However, Cummins' Peter McDowell stresses that the !SF will become the standard in the US over time".

The ISCe does not use a common-rail injection system. Instead, it has a high-pressure pump-and-accumulator setup called CAPS (Cummins Accumulator Pump System), controlled by a similar INTERACT system. Again, it meets

Euro-3 without aftertreatment or EGR, and torque levels are up by around 20% on the C-Series.

Like the !Vie, it has four valves per cylinder.

The Sr and ISCe will both enter full production at the beginning of next year: the ISBe is likely to power the replacement for Oaf's 45 Series, and both engines could be offered in ERF models.
