• Sharp cuts in the Government's road building budget come into force this week, ending a decade of continuous expansion.
Capital spending on motorways and major roads in the next financial year will be Z2bn, compared with 12.3bn in 199394—by 1997-98 it will be down to Z1.9bn, The cuts continue to anger the British Road Federation, which points out that nearly 4,000 miles of local authority Aroads are in need of urgent structural repair at a time when the local authorities have had their road budgets cut by £100m.
BRF campaign co-ordinator Andrew Pharoah says: "Considering the tax that hauliers pay, it's not too much to ask to have a road network free of potholes."
