• The expiry of a technical co-operation contract between Land Rover and Santana, of Spain, has led to speculation on the future of Land Rover activities there.
Assembly at the Linares plant began in 1959 and by the end of last year almost 250,000 Land Rovers had been produced.
Although they resemble the British originals, the Spanishmade vehicles — known since 1987 as Santana — now have 100% local content.
Suzuki vehicles are also built at the plant, which is to be considerably enlarged and adapted to Japanese production methods. It is expected that Suzuki will increase its holding of 18% in Santana and possibly take over the 31% still held by the British manufacturer.
