• Warning that the maintenance record of John Cherry of Aintree Coach Hire justifies the revocation of the company's PSV 0-licence, North Western Traffic Commissioner Martin Albu renewed it at a Manchester public inquiry, with authorisation to operate an additional vehicle.
Cherry had applied for authority to operate five vehicles. The Commissioner was told that a vehicle had been given a delayed prohibition during its annual test on 16 March, and another had been given an immediate prohibition during its annual test on 3 March.
Cherry's operating centre was said to be inadequate. Inspections had been carried out by North Western Road Car and Wingates Tours, both of whom had expressed concern that defects reported to Cherry had not been rectified.

mended changing parts that had begun to wear, but Cherry had been adjusting and greasing them up instead. There had been some driver resistance to the introduction of a daily-nildefect reporting system.
In future North Western would repair defects necessary to ensure the vehicle was fit to go on the road — they were also carrying out roller brake and headlight-alignment tests.
For Cherry, John Backhouse argued that he was now on the right track.
Albu said he was not happy with the situation. This was the third time Cherry had appeared at public inquiry. He had been severely warned in the past and nothing had been done: passengers had been carried in unsafe and unfit vehicles.
However, subject to the receipt of a letter of confirmation from North Western, he proposed taking no disciplinary action against the licence, which expires in August 1990.
