• Spurred on by the prospect of deregulation in 1992, London Regional Transport has split up London Buses into 11 separate companies to give them time to prepare for the open market.
London General Transport Services, one of the new subsidiaries, was launched on 1 April with 54 bus routes in south-west and central London. The company, based in Mitcham, has 594 vehicles operating from Merton, Putney, Stockwell and Sutton. LGTS also has two subsidiaries of its own: Central London Midibuses, based at Victoria Basement, and Red Arrow, based at at Walworth. LGTS employs 2,224 (including 1,445 drivers and 314 conductors).
Managing director Keith Ludeman, hopes that by being smaller, London General will get "closer to the customer" and bring back "old-fashioned qualities of service, like reliability, safety, courtesy and cleanliness."
