• GM Buses, the largest operator awned by a Transport Authority, aims to lose up to 700 jobs as part of a £5 million cost-cutting exercise.
It needs to drag itself out of the red and raise cash for vehicle replacement.
The company hopes to avoid further service cuts: its network has already been hit by cuts at the end of last year. Proposed staff reductions will affect management at HQ, divisional and depot levels.
GMB plans to shed one of its three divisions: all three divisional managers' jobs have already been abolished, with one manager taking early retirement and another leaving the firm. Each depot will be accountable for its own operation under the plan and depot general managers will be appointed to take charge of GMB's 14 depots.
Studies at GM Engineering and GM Property Services could yield additional cuts. GM plans to have the new structure in place soon and has not ruled out the use of compulsory redundancies.
