• Allison will present its WT (World Transmission) automatic transmission in the UK this summer at its first showing in this country.
The presentations in June and July will form part of a fleet of vehicles fitted with Allison transmissions which will visit 20 venues in eight European countries.
The WT transmission, fitted to a Van Hool coach, "is controlled by close loop adaptive electronic controls", says Allison's Dennis Priddy. This automatically alters the setting of the gearchange according to speed and wear. The WT also includes a memory which monitors the operation of the system.
It will not be available in this country until 1991, roughly six months after its launch as an OE fitting in the US.
Priddy expects large-scale production to make the WT cheaper, in some cases lower than its conventional equivalents in the Allison range.
The WT will come in four sizes and two distinct types to cater for trucks and PSVs: the latter will feature close gear splits and a retarder.
