Bill Brock reviews some of the more interes-ing products exhibited at Amsterdam this year

THE AUTOVAK exhibition is an international fair held biannually at the Amsterdam RAI Exhibition Centre. This year it was bigger than ever before with over 270 exhibitors, some from as far away as the USA, filling the 36,000sqm (387,500sqft) floor space.

Basically a show for the trade, it includes items of machinery, equipment and tools for repair, maintenance, inspection, manufacture and assembly of motor vehicles, but with only selected items aimed specifically at the commercial vehicle section of the industry.

1 Vehicle lifts were in abundance, but the Hetra shown by Arnbro BV, Binnenhavenweg 25, 8211 AA Lelysted, has separate legs which can be used in pairs, sets of three or four or one at a time, as preferred.

Its advantages over a static lift is that it does not limit the lifting facility to one area of the workshop, allowing much more efficient and flexible use of available space. The package is said to be about 10 per cent cheaper than equivalent post lifts and there are no expensive installation costs.

2 Another pneumatically operated tyre changer was demonstrated removing an inflated tyre from the wheel in a matter of seconds and replacing it just as quickly. Only applicable for tubeless tyres, of course, which is how they are able to manage without a cage. This mode; was demonstrated by Van Rooy Dorsman By, Spaklerweg 69, Industrielterrein Arnstel 11, 1099 33 Amsterdam.

3 One of the many items of garage equipment displayed by Hebu BV of Stationweg 152, 251 5 BS Den Haag. was the Flex-Hone — a tool, flexible in diameter, intended for polishing cylinder bores which is able to cope with irregularities of shape due to its many polishing heads. It may be some time before one of this size is used on automotive engines.

4 Among a strong British contingent, Epco Ltd of Knowsthorpe Gate, Cross Green Industrial Estate, Leeds LS9 OSJ exhibited a range of garage jacks and lifts. The JB 40, a two-tonne jacking beam can be used separately above a pit or in conjunction with a hydraulic engine lift_ 5 A spot welder from Aro

Machinery Co Ltd, 190 Castlenau, London SW13, applicable to the body repair industry, has automatic adjustment built in to ensure a constant quality in the weld. If the conditions of operation are beyond the capability of the machine, it gives out an audiovisual alarm signal.

6 The possible hazards of breathing in asbestos dust during

brake overhauls makes the

brake washer shown by Lebon and Visser NV, Kostverloren

weg 56, 3762 EM Soest, an attractive proposition. Using non-toxic soap and water heated to a temperature of 80'C, all the dust can be removed before the

drum is taken off. e, 7 Time-consuming measurements of tyre pressure could be

dispensed with if a device

manufactured by BV Brezan, Nijverheidsweg 9,. 3771 ME

Barneweld, proves successful. it is claimed that its tyre pressure control apparatus can indicate That a tyre pressure is more than 10 per cent low just by running the vehicle over a set of plungers set in the road surface. If it does work and become accepted, it will be a fillip to safety and prolong the life of commercial vehicle tyres.

1:1 This piece of equipment was shown by Van Rooy Dorsman as an aid in the removal of gearboxes. Used in a pit or under a post-lift, the hydraulic ram is pumped up to give sup port before dismantling. Once free, the upper trolley is lowered on to the runners, located transversely, and if there is sufficient clearance below the vehicle chassis, the unit can be moved out sideways.

9 The RAI Exhibition centre in Amsterdam was well attended, with over 200 exhibitors at this year's Autovak.
