AN INDEPENDENT inquiry is to look into the issues raised by the economic and environmental impact of the lorry.
Transport Minister William Rodgers, who first spoke of the inquiry last November, announced in the Commons hours before the "confidence" vote last week that he had now decided to set up the inquiry.
Its terms of reference would be: "To consider the causes and consequences of the growth in the movement of freight by road and, in particular, of the impact of the lorry on people and their environment; and to report on how best to ensure that future developments serve the public interest."
The Minister was not able to give the name of the chairman and members, but he believed that MPs would be reassured that it was a group of people of considerable substance, who would approach this matter in a very open way.
