SUZUKI, the Japanese company previously known in this country for its motorcycles, has entered the British commercial vehicle market with a four-wheel-drive and light van range.

A new company, Suzuki GB (Cars) is handling the impor ting and marketing of iA new light commercial the ST8OV Carry van and the ST8OK Carry pick-up.

Both are powered by Suzuki's own 797cc (49cuin) aluminium four-cylinder water-cooled petrol engine, located in the centre of the chassis under the floor. This overhead camshaft unit develops 28 kW (37 bhp) at 5,500 rpm and 56 Nm (421bft) torque.

The ST8OV van can carry a payload of 450kg (8.9cwt), and has an upward-hinging rear cargo door and a sliding door on both sides.

The ST8OK pick-up has a payload capacity of 500kg (9.8cwt) and both the sides and the tailboard drop down.

Cabs of both models boast car-type comforts, the van having separate driver and passenger seats Wiih•heddrests, while the pick-up has a bench seat with a headrest for the driver only.

Suzuki says the owner can expect an average fuel consumption of about 8.61it/ 100km (33mpg)forboth the van and the pick-up. Prices start at £1,959 for the basic pick-up.

Suzuki's four-wheel-drive off-road vehicle, the 1180, is powered by the same 797 cc engine as the van and pick-up, but in an up-rated version giving 31kW (41 bhp) at 5,50Orpm.

This drives through a fourspeed gearbox with either high or low ratios, giving eight forward speeds in either two or four-wheel drive. The L180 comes in two versions: a convertible incorporating a fold-flat windscreen, and a hard-top (the 1180V) with a side-opening rear door.

Leaf springs are used on both front and rear, and 16inch wheels give adequate ground clearance for off-road work.

The 1180 has a payload capacity of 250 kg (4.9 cwt), while the heavier hardtop version can carry 200 kg (3.9 cwt).

Suzuki says that the small size and weight of the LJ80 models enable them to reach places inaccessible to larger four-wheel-drive vehicles. Prices start at £2,900 for the LJ80 convertible version.

Further information on both the light commercial vehicles and the four-wheel-drive models is available from Suzuki GB (Cars), 87 Beddington Lane, Croydon, Surrey.
