THE OPERATOR-DRIVER relationship in road haulage is often better than union-driver relationship, according to RHA national chairman John Silberman.
He told the members of the Association's East Midlands area at their annual dinner in Nottingham last Friday that "the biggest trade union in the world failed to bring out more than perhaps one driver in four following their strike call."
He accused the TGWU of failing to tell the drivers what had been offered by the employers and said that it was the RHA publicity campaign that communicated the facts. Following the campaign, "literally thousands of drivers returned to work" he said.
Mr Silberman said that in the union-employer relationship there is an unacceptable balance of power. He said that employers must always unite to negotiate with unions.
The area chairman, R. C. Ward, blamed the Prime Minister, who had failed to make his five per cent policy stick. He attacked "irresponsible militants who damage the country" and called on the road haulage industry to "go out on polling day and elect a responsible government."
