C. S. Williams has been appointed managing director of Smith's Electric Vehicles Ltd. Mr Williams joined Smith's as general sales manager in September 1968 and became general manager to the electric vehicle division when production was centralized at the Marquisway factory in January 1970.

Marcus Smith, executive director and general manager of the Leyland National Co Ltd at Workington since its formation, is appointed operations director bus plants, British Leyland truck and bus division. Mr Smith, who had previously held executive positions with NBC including Bristol Commercial Vehicles and subsequently with United Transport Overseas Services, joined Leyland Motors as deputy gm in 1968. In his new appointment Mr Smith is responsible for controlling and co-ordinating bus manufacturing operations at Park Royal Vehicles. Charles H. Roe, Eastern Coach Works, Bristol Commercial Vehicles and Leyland National. John Battersby, md of Leyland DAB AS in Denmark, has been appointed to succeed Mr Marcus Smith as plant director of Leyland National.

R. 0. C. Swayne has been appointed chairman of Overseas Containers Ltd in succession to Sir Andrew Crichton who has retired. M. J. (Mike) Hemphrey (Garrett and Hemphrey Ltd, Nottingham) was on Wednesday installed as chairman of the East Midland area of the Road Haulage Association. Mr Hemphrey is a member of the RHA national council and has in the past been chairman of the Association's Nottingham sub-area and of the area tipping group.

John Tate, assistant operating manager, Alder Valley Services, will become traffic manager of Yorkshire Traction Co Ltd in succession to D. G. Codling who has left to become principal assistant (special projects) Edinburgh Corporation Transport.

D. A. I. MacDonald, well known for over 15 years in northern transport circles, has been appointed Scottish and Northern Ireland sales agent by W. J. Leech, tarpaulin makers of Liverpool, to assist in their current expansion programme.

Alf Thomas, sales director of Edbro Ltd, has relinquished his executive responsibilities for sales because of ill health, but continues as a director in a consultative capacity. F. Hoff takes charge of sales office administration responsible to the managing director, Geoffrey S. Moss. Trevor Cosford has been promoted Northampton branch manager of Godfrey Homes Ltd.

RHA elections

G. D. James (Wrekin Roadways Ltd.) has been re-elected chairman of the heavy haulage and machinery carriers group of the Road Haulage Association: C. W. Oliver (Beck and Pollitzer Engineering Ltd) and P. Sunter (Sunter Brothers Ltd) are vice-chairmen.

H. G. Taylor of H. G. Taylor (Haulage) Ltd has been elected chairman of the Eastern area of the RHA. The vice-chairmen are C. W. Bridge of C. W. Bridge General Haulage Ltd and M. Watson of John Watson Ltd of Great Wakening.
