Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A4,000-GALLON tanker making use of the increase in maximum legal laden weight from 22 tons to 24 tons has been added to the fleet of Shell-Mex and B.P., Ltd. It is based on an A.E.C. Mammoth Major eightwheeled chassis, and is readily convertible to carry a wide range of petroleum products.

The Thompson Bros. tank has five 800-gallon compartments and is mounted on box-type bearers with holding-down straps, and fixed to the chassis by U-bolts with frame blocks. Each compartment has an ErneĀ° B700 open-fill manhole cover with B702 loading gauge. There is separate provision for closed filling adjacent to the dipping points, which are in the centre of each compartment, with tubes extending down into the outlet sumps.

Outflow from each compartment is controlled by 5-in, hydraulic footvalves, with 5-in, outlet pipes ending

in 21-in, universal outlets. A small

hand-operated reciprocating pump feeds through a selector valve to the five footvalve ram cylinders at the top of each compartment.

The footvalves can be closed from a single low-level position at the near side, or, for split-load deliveries, at the top of each tank near the dipping point. There is also a separate emergency means for closure on each side. the design of the footvalve allows it to be serviced with the vehicle loaded.

For power deliveries, a Varley SH200 pump of 200 g.p.rra. capacity is shaftdriven from a Harper two-speed power take-off. For liquids other than petrol, the cargo pump has a separate intake point allowing a selective suction hose to be joined to one of the outlet cocks. When used for fuel-oil deliveries, the 21-in, cocks are replaced by a 5-in. manifold with a 4-in, control valve to join the five outlet pipes to the pump.

The vehicle is fully panelled and has a folding step-ladder on each side at the front, with triple walkways on top of the tank. Inside the panelling there are two tool lockers and space to carry six 15-ft. lengths of 3-in, delivery hose with blanking plugs to avoid spillage.

Reeve and Kenning, Ltd., built the light-alloy cab, which has sliding doors and a Smiths heater.
