Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Street Sweeping AMETHOD of street sweeping that combines efficiency with flexibility was described by Mr. R. G. Totty, F.Inst.P.C., cleansing superintendent and transport manager of Stokeon-Trent, in a paper which he read at the annual spring meeting of the Institute of Public Cleansing at Stoke.

A vehicle such as that illustrated on

this page is employed. Besides the driver, 12 men, a chargehand and four street-orderly trucks are carried. The men stand in the compartment behind the cab and the trucks and tools are carried in the body. The standing compartment is ventilated and steadying handles are fitted, and there are pegs on which clothes m4y be hung when the men leave the vehicle.

At about 7 a.m. each morning, the vehicle and crew leave the depot for the points front which sweeping operations begin. Three men are dropped at each point and 25 minutes after the teams have been set down, the vehicle returns to pick up full containers for emptying. Later, the men are brought hack for breakfast.

The sequence continues until one team's area is swept, when the men are taken to the next block.

One advantage is that if ,a hill has to be swept, the lorry can take the men and their equipment to the top so that

they may work downhill. Normally, the vehicle proceeds to disposal points two or three times a day. The total weight collected each day is about 7 tons, but may rise to about 14-16 tons in winter after gritting.

The system provides for some 30-35 per cent, more effective work to be done, compared with normal methods. and the sweepers find that\ their task is easier. Two men sweep, one on each side of the road, and the third man fills the orderly bins.
