A New Hydraulic Jack which will Lift 10 tons, Entailing but a Small Expenditure of Power.
ANEW 10-ton model known as the Magnum has just been produced by the makers of the French Margib hydraulic jack. The touring car models of the Margib have been on the market. in Franco for some years now d have gained considerable popularity. The jack is simple in design and most efficient. The oil supply is contained in an outer cylinder surrounding the working ram cylinder, and a double-barrelled see-saw pump forces the oil under the ram in the central cylinder. A small valve at the base of the cylinder allows the oil to escape into the annular reservoir again, and by regulating this valve the jack can be made to descend at any desired speed. The physical effort required to work the pump is very small indeed, and the illustration, which shows the front of a heavy tank lorry being lifted by a woman, is.• no mere flight of fancy.• . Some experiments were made recently with one of the Margib jacks in the laboratory of the National Arts et Metiers Engineering College. Two tests were made, using levers of different lengths. The jack was placed between the plates of a vertical compression testing machine. At the first attempt a lift of 6,000 kgwas obtained without much effort, using a lever 1 metre 20 cm in length.. A second trial was made using a lever only 74 cm. long, and the same lifting power was registered, the operator using one hand only. After these tests, the working of the jack wets found to be absolutely normal, and no deformation could be observed in the parts.
The Magnum type of Margib jack, which is designed specialty for heavy vehicles, is built on exactly the same lines as those of the popular touring car models, but naturally more substantial. The height of the jack with the ram in its lowest position is 365 mm. (just under 14.i. ins.), but with the aid of a racked-step arrangement which is supplied with the jack a lift can be obtained from a height of only 120 ram. (under 4/ ins.) from ground level. For reaching, high axles without the necessity of putting a block under the jack, the ram itself is made in two parts, and the inner member can be screwed out.
The Magnum Margib appears to be a thoroughly sound and useful accessory, and its very low selling price should give it a good chance of success. The manufacturers of Margib jacks, Messrs. De la Mare Gibert et Cie., of 4 Rue des Arts, Levallois-Ferret, Seine, are anxious to find an agent in England who will handle the jack for the British market.
