CARDIFF MUNICIPAL BUS DEVELOPMENTS,
The Council Authorities Decide Upon the Purchase of New Buses for Extending the City Services.
TEE Cardiff City Council hag decided. to develop its bus servie6s very. 'materially, and in order to put its plans into effect has decided to buy immediately seven single-decked buses, the chassis of which are estimated to cost .€8,008. The bodies for the vehicles will he built specially to the design of the council, and it is understood that some
• of the work, at least, will be carried out locally. At a later date an additional 13 buses will be acquired to complete _ the scheme for new services that has been adopted.
In connection with its bus services the council has decided to build a new garage at Severn Road and plans are now being drafted for approval. The general manager of the services (Mr. R. L. Horsfield) has recommended that all single-deck buses now in use be fitted with low-pressure pneumatic tyres, and this suggestion has been approved by the tramways committee.
In the matter of extension of routes, one development is to be proceeded with immediately. A circular service is to be run from Cardiff to Capel LlaniI
terne, Craigian and on to Peutyreh, thence via Merganstown and Radyr and back to Cardiff. This service will commence in April and will provide facilities for Cardiff residents to undertake picnics throughout the summer months to popular countryside rendezvous, such as the Garth Mountains, in addition to providing for suburban residents and others in districts farther afield whose business calls them to the city.
Alderman Sydney Jenkins, chairman of the Cardiff Tramways Committee, recently received from Mr. Bevin, the Transport Union official, an misolicited testimonial to the efficiency of the Cardiff bus services. Mr. Bevan stated that, in his opinion, Cardiff has the best bus services in Great Britain.
A welfare club has been founded by the employees of the council's motorbus and tramways service,, and at a recent social evening at the Carlton Hotel, .Cardiff, 650 of the staff of the passengercarrying departments were present. Alderman Jenkins and Mr. R. L. Borgfield are the joint presidents of the club, which should be most successful.
