• Lucas has developed an IIGV drive axle disc brake and predicts that by 2001 half the goods vehicles produced will have discs on the steered axles. "For the space available, you get better braking performance from discs," says Jeff Pratt. of Lucas.
At present only the 7.5 tonne Cargo has all-round discs, but using an air over hydraulic system. Renault has moved to discs on some of its R range and the AE heavy tractors. Lucas expects that the AE will be the first production fitment of its new drive axle reaction beam air disc.
