• The Institute of Directors has launched a campaign against industry's wasteful use of energy, and transport companies are being targeted as potential converts.
Transport accounts for more than 30% of UK energy consumption and over 70% of the nation's consumption of fuel oil.
The loD has produced a booklet, the Directors Guide of Energy Management, to help road transport companies save both energy and money. It includes advice on transport technology, vehicle design and vehicle maintenance.
The institute's recommendations include: 0 Drivers should be educated in the correct use of engine torque rather than engine power; 1=1 Vehicles should match job requirements; El Fuel consumption should be monitored for each lorry and driver combination; 0 Consideration should be given to aerodynamic devices; El Operators should make sure that their route planning is efficient. UK business and domestic consumers waste more than £8bri a year because of wasteful use of energy. Efficient energy management is one of the best ways to cut overheads, says the loD.
