ichelin's reminder of some centenaries (see elsewhere on this page) sent your avian correspondent burrowing into our archives in search of further transport memorabilia. CM doesn't extend back a hundred years, alas, but here's a taste of what was going on in our pages exactly 80 years ago...
Correspondent WEC' of Battersea, having lauded the fuel economy of his Foden (in this case a steamer) warned his fellow operators to beware the "over-vigilance" of police on the road between Croydon and Mitcham, just down the road from CM's current rural retreat. If stopped, he advised hauliers to "pay up and look pleasant". And there was I thinking that on-the-spot fines were a new idea.
The Dennis Rifle Club handed out the trophies for its latest shoot-out during a Smoking Concert at Guildford Town Hall. The main award was the Shrapnell-Smith Silver Trophy; donated, one presumes, by E Shrapnell-Smith, an illustrious predecessor of our current editor Brian Weatherley. By happy coincidence Weatherley is also a shooting enthusiast; perhaps he should get together with the chaps down at Dennis with a view to reviving the award?
