Le Petit Journal
ichelin reminds the Hawk that its newly patented "demountable" tyre — ie not solid — was fitted to the winning cycle on the Paris/Brest/Paris bicycle race on 6 September, 100 years ago. Charles Terront's inspiring victory, says Michelin, led to the pneumatic tyre being developed for commercial road transport.
The race was organised by Le Petit Journal over a 1,200km course — a touch longer than Commercial Motor's Scottish test route. Helpfully, Michelin points out that 1891 was also the year the zip fastener was invented and Blackpool Tower was built.
