• Smethwickbased Samra Dairy has been given a 12-month licence so that it can prove to West Midland Licensing Authority John Mervyn Pugh that it has a satisfactory maintenance system.
The company's application for a three-vehicle restricted licence was adjourned last month to enable it to take legal advice (CM 8-14 Aug).
When the hearing resumed the company's maintenance manager John Stephen said the vehicles were being inspected every three weeks, Drivers had been given duplicate books to report defects and were instructed to make nil returns. However, no reports had yet come in.
After the LA asked why that system was not working, Stephen said that he only worked part time and was not there when drivers came back. He told the LA he had problems making director Mahatma Samra understand his legal obligations because of language problems, but he was learning Punjabi.
