Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• VL Churchill is to launch a portable diesel smokemeter at the Automotive Trade Show, later this month. The new meter, Dieseltune DX210, takes a sample of exhaust from inside the tail pipe, heats it to 100°C and measures its opacity. The unit can constantly read the sample's opacity, give the maximum reading (as in the free acceleration test) or the average of five acceleration tests.

The readout can be given as a percentage of opacity or milligrams of soot per cubic metre. Alternatively Hartridge, K or Bosch units can be selected. A paper printout can be made if required. Power for the unit can be from the mains in the workshop or from a 24V or 12V battery at the roadside. It is expected to cost between £2,500 and £3,000.
