An exhaust gas purifier, introduced at the Clean Air Exhibition by the manufacturer, Engelhard Sales, is now in production. The purifier is known as the PTX and harnesses catalytic action to oxidize carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and odour-causing compounds in the exhausts of power units operating on unleaded petrol, diesel oil or I.p.g.
A platinum metal catalyst, the heart of the system, purifies combustion gases but is not itself consumed in the reaction. The compactness of the unit enables it to be fitted in place of the conventional silencer and it does not interfere with normal maintenance. Warm-up occupies about 30/40sec and the PTX is, therefore, particularly suitable for engines of vehicles engaged on stop-start work or which continuously operate at low speeds.
After entering the exhaust pipe. the gases pass through a venturi which draws air into the system through a filter. The air mixes with the gases and the combustibles are later burned in a catalyst chamber. Oxidation of the combustibles generates additional heat which is sensed by a thermocouple and pyrometer circuit.
It is claimed that the purifier provides a means of checking the tune of an engine and thereby enables fuel consumption to be reduced.
