Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• As from September 1, time alone governs recommended service intervals for Bedford light vans, replacing the "whichever comes first" alternatives of mileage or time

Introducing the Euroservice 365 Maintenance Plan last Friday Mr. 0_ G. Maddox, Vauxhall's service manager, said that under the superseded Guardian Maintenance scheme there had been a growing tendency for owners to use mileage as a basis for service intervals, without regard to the time element. In many cases, said Mr. Maddox, this created the risk or inadequate and too-infrequent servicing.

Euroservice 365 has been devised to ensure that Bedford vans are serviced at least once very three months, irrespective of mileage. It provides for more thoroughly planned maintenance, and owners are expected to benefit from greater reliability, safety, economy and better trade-in values from their vehicles. The plan has built-in flexibility so that it can be tailored to the needs of all owners.

To ensure comprehensive attention at three-monthly intervals, the Euroservice 365 programme provides for a maintenance service every six months, with a safety check mid-way between services.

This is thought to be the first time that a separate, complete safety check—with the same status as a full service—has been included in a manufacturer's maintenance programme. As its name implies, the safety check consists of a thorough investigation of vehicle safety requirements, with specific attention to engine, brakes, electrical system, steering, suspension, wheels, ty,res and seat belts.

In the new plan, optional checks and adjustments are no longer included with the listed service items. Each three-monthly schedule provides a full and thorough check-over, highlighting areas in which attention is necessary. An important provision of the service is that the owner is informed specifically of points requiring attention, so enabling him to have repair work done before any faults develop further.

Euroservice 365 is the recommended maintenance plan for all new vans leaving the Vauxhall factories since September 1 and the appropriate booklet will be in each vehicle.

A parallel scheme will be operated by General Motors dealerships throughout Europe.
