• A 20-ton-gross bulk vehicle equipped with a demountable aluminium tipper body has been supplied by B. W. Winter and Sons, Watlington, King's Lynn, Norfolk to James K. Smith and Son of East Calder, Scotland. The Winter body is interchangeable with a platform type.
Based on a Bedford KM chassis, the vehicle was converted to a six-wheeler with a wheelbase of 15ft 6in. by the York com pany, the tandem-axle being a York unit of the load-transfer type. This feature was specified by the operator to provide extra adhesion when visiting farms. The body measures 21ft by 8ft by 41t and can carry a payload of 12 tons. In the main the tipper will be employed for the transport of turnips.
Four lightweight tripod stands are used to demount the body (when unladen), the cost of the set being £35. The telescopic centre posts of the stands are raised with the aid of the vehicle jack. Sliding bars are fitted into slots to support the body on the forks of the posts.
Equipped with a Telehoist FR5183 singleram gear, the body has a steel lifting frame, the hinge pins being mounted in steel longitudinals that fit into channel runners attached to the vehicle chassis with side fish plates. Four withdrawable pins locate the assembly, while the ram gear has flexible hoses with quick-release couplings. The tip per platform body can be removed in about 10min. The total extra cost of employing demountable equipment is about £80 and the weight penalty is approximately 2cwt.
Of riveted construction, the tipper body has sides of lOg sheet which are supported by top-hat external posts, the floor being of light-alloy plank. Specified by the operator, two shallow drop panels having a length and depth of 7ft and lft 3in. respectively are fitted in each side to facilitate the loading of turnips by hand or power loader.
The second axle of the tandem bogie is mounted on the trailing ends of the balance beams linked at the front to the leaf springs of the leading axle. An air-operated diaphragm unit is linked to the forward end of the rocker on each side and can be used to increase the load on the driving axle and reduce the load on the second axle. If required the trailing axle can be lifted clear of the ground.
Later demountable bodies will be located on twistlocks of the container type. These will be Mounted on outrigged brackets and will enable the sub-frame to be dispensed with.
