• Increased fares on its services throughout Scotland are being sought by the Scottish Bus 'Group in an application to the Scottish Traffic Commissioners.
The hearing is expected next month and the increases, if approved, would be brought into force as soon as possible.
A Scottish Bus Group official said in Edinburgh on Sunday that the increased fares were necessary because of wages increases costing about Cl m.
The Group proposals are: single fares-3d fares to be increased by 1d; 4d fares to be retained between selected stages of half-amile or less; remaining 4d and all fares to 1s
8d to be increased by 1d; between 1s 10d and 4s 9d, an increase of 2d; 5s and over to be increased by 3d.
Return fares are to be eliminated where the revised single fare is is 9d or less; return fares applicable to new single fares from 2s to 5s 3d to be increased by 3d, except for revised single of 3s 2d, which would be increased by 6d; standard return fares to apply to revised singles from 5s 6d upwards.
Limited journey tickets-12-journey rates to be increased by five per cent and rounded off to nearest 6d; the group also want increases on the 10-journey, 24-journey and sub-standard journey rates. Scholars' tickets: No. 1—existing scale revised and rounded off to nearest 6d to provide increase of five per cent: No. 2—existing Scale revised on basis of 150 per cent of revised No. 1 rate, rounded off to nearest 6d.
The companies asking for the fares increases are: Scottish Omnibuses Ltd., Edinburgh; W. A. Alexander and Sons (Midland) Ltd., Falkirk; W. Alexander and Sons (Fife), Ltd., Kirkcaldy; Central SMT Co. Ltd., Motherwell; Western SMT Co, Ltd., Kilmarnock; W. Alexander and Sons (Northern) Ltd., Aberdeen; Highland Omnibuses Ltd„ Inverness; and Peter Burr (Omnibuses) Ltd., Inverness.
W. Alexander and Sons (Fife) Ltd., are applying for permission to increase workers' fares on town services in Kirkcaldy by ld from 11d. The W. Alexander companies in Fife, Falkirk and Aberdeen are all seeking to discontinue students' tickets.
